Making a difference in our community since 1925.
History of GFWC Brandon Junior Woman’s Club
In 1925, members decided to build a small clubhouse that would serve the entire community. The building was completed in 1928 and the first meeting for its 45 members took place on September 6, 1928.
At various times, the clubhouse was used as a polling place, a driver’s licensing facility and a draft board during World War II. In 1935, the club opened a health clinic at the clubhouse that served the community until the 1960’s. Once a month, a doctor and nurse from Hillsborough County Health Service used the facility to give babies checkups and immunizations. In 1960 the club resurrected a libaray in a corner of its small clubhouse, serving Brandon area three days a week until the county opened a new library in 1968. The clubhouse is designated as a historical landmark in Hillsborough County. The Brandon Woman’s Club membership declined and eventually disbanded. However, it deeded the “little building that could” to the Brandon Junior Woman’s Club. We proudly continue to care for this historic building today.
GFWC Brandon Junior Woman’s Club came into existence in 1955. In the early years, the Brandon Juniors were instrumental in the building of the Brandon Civic Center and worked diligently to build the cabinets in the facility that were used for over 25 years. In addition to supporting the many projects of the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs, such as Sunland Training Centers, Project Concern, Hacienda Girls Ranch, Project Healthy Baby, Special Olympics, and others, we were the motivating force behind the School of Hope for Exceptional Children, pre-school vision screening and the Mother’s March of Dimes in Brandon. Our club purchased CPR equipment for the Brandon community and donated it to the Brandon Community Hospital when it opened.
For many years, Brandon Juniors had worked enthusiastically with the President’s Round Table to raise the money to realize the dream of a Cultural Center in Brandon. When the Cultural Center became a reality, Brandon Juniors became one of the founding patrons. We also worked to renovate and increase public awareness of the Nettles Group Home, a permanent home for eleven profoundly disabled children.
Over the years, our projects have varied, as have our many members, but our goal has remained constant and will continue to do so- to be of service to our community.
Our mission is to improve our community by volunteering time and financial resources through programs and fundraising that support many groups and charities in the Brandon area.
Our Community Service Programs and Special Projects focus on the major issues of our time—supporting women’s health, preserving natural resources, promoting literacy and equality, and encouraging volunteer service—and fall into the following areas of concentration:
Signature Program - Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention
Junior’s Special Program - Advocate for Children
Arts and Culture
Civic Engagement and Outreach
Environment
Education and Libraries
Health and Wellness
